Direct to Film FAQ's

Direct to Film FAQ's

What is DTF?

Direct to Film, also known as DTF is a printing method done on a commercial printer, using a PET film and textile ink. Once the design is printed onto the PET film, it gets an adhesive layer of powder applied to the design. The film then goes through a heater to melt the adhesive powder into the design. After this process, the design is ready to be pressed!

What is a Gang Sheet?

A gang sheet is a roll of film loaded with designs. These can be the same design or a mixture of designs. Gang sheets are 22 inches wide and the length will vary based on how many designs you have.

Why Would I Want a Gang Sheet Instead of Individual Prints?

A gang sheet is a great way to save money on your transfers. Gang sheets help you keep your profit margins high!

As an example, if you needed 4 10.5 inch transfers, that would cost you $18 if you did individual sheets.

If you ordered a 22x24 gang sheet, it would cost you $14, making it $3.50 per transfer.

What Size Gang Sheet Do I Need?

This will vary based on how many images you have and what size you want the images printed at.

As an example, a 22x24 gang sheet would typically give you enough room for 4 11 inch images.

What Are the Design Requirements?

Your artwork needs to have a transparent background and be as close to 300 DPI as possible. I use a commercial printer and it picks up every detail in the art work, so poor art work doesn't always look great when printed.

What Do You Do With My Artwork?

We only use your artwork to print YOUR order! We keep your images on file for 30 days. After that, your files are deleted.

If you see that we offer an image that you also submitted, we are always happy to show proof of purchase of said image.

I Need Artwork Help?

Do I Need a Heat Press? Will an Iron Work?

Yes, you do need a heat press. DTF transfers require heavy pressure. Although, some people have had luck using a home iron or Easy Press, we are not able to guarantee that the transfers will hold up in the wash.

How Do You Apply DTF?

You can review our pressing instructions here: https://208customdesigns.com/pages/pressing-instructions

Do I Need to Mirror My Images?

No, please do not mirror your images. Our software does this for you!

Does DTF Feel Like Plastic?

Not all DTF is created equally. You want to ensure the person printing for you is using a commercial printer. Trust me, there is a difference!

With that said, every design will feel different. If you are having a full photo printed, it is going to feel heavier than a design with more empty space.

How to Wash Clothing With DTF?

Do not wash or dry on high heat. You want to use low or low-medium heat. Please ensure that no fabric softener is used!

How Should The Back of My Transfer Look?

Your transfer should have a white coating, it should feel smooth and resemble an orange peel. If your transfer feels like sand, it's under cured.

How Long Does DTF Last?

With proper pressing (heavy pressure) and proper washing/drying, your transfers should last at least 50 washes.

Can DTF Be Applied to Any Fabric?

Yes, transfers can be applied to any fabric. In fact, you can also apply your transfers to canvas, wood, cardboard and much more!

Can DTF Go On Any Color?

Yes, DTF transfers have a white backing which allows you to press onto any color shirt.
